Collection includes typescripts, correspondence, and newspaper clippings. Highlights include mimeographed statements relating to the Sigma Nu Foundation of West Virginia, Inc.; the inauguration of Dr. Irvin Stewart as president of West Virginia University; West Virginia authors; and the University budget. Also included are twelve typescripts of letters written from St. Petersburg, Russia, by a representative of the Ross Winans' Locomotive Works, Baltimore, Maryland (1859-1862).

Personal and professional correspondence (1914-1956), typescripts, research notes, clippings, photographs, maps, drafts and manuscripts of published and unpublished historical studies. The correspondence includes a number of letters from historians in the 1920s and 1930s. Other subjects covered in the papers include the McNeill Rangers, the Civil War, Moravian Missionaries, floods in the South Branch Valley, and secondary education in West Virginia.

Two letters from the auditor of the state of West Virginia, John C. Bond, and the treasurer, W.S. Johnson, relating to payment of money out of the state treasury. Charles H. Ambler asked Harper to solicit these letters.

Material written and collected by a former curator of the West Virginia and Regional History Collection that includes bibliographies, transcripts, photostats, papers and historical sketches on various aspects of West Virginia history. Items deal with prominent West Virginia University historians, the Civil War, early settlement, industrial growth, and West Virginia University. A number of letters and circulars discuss the West Virginia Historical Society in 1869.
Coal Company Records Survey
Twenty letters from various coal interests responding to an inquiry pertaining to the history of early coal development in West Virginia. The survey was conducted by J.S. McWhorter, Attorney for Gauley Coal Land Company, for the Business Historical Society. Respondents include: C.H. Ambler, W.W. Chilton, Brooks Fleming, Jr. B. Laing, and George T. Watson.
