William J. Pyewell, Civil War Soldier's Letter

Overview

A letter from William J. Pyewell, a Union solider, to his mother. This letter was sent from his unit's encampment at Bolivar where winter quarters were being established which he noted by mentioning the construction of bakery ovens. He says that he is not to be discharged before the end of the war which he thinks can not last more than three years. He also says that he will send part of his pay to her since they are expecting the paymaster and that he will ask for a furlough soon.

William Jennings Bryan, Letter regarding Contest Sponsorship

Overview

An ALS to Dr. [D. B.] Purinton, President of West Virginia University, in which William Jennings Bryan (1860-1925) gives the President $250 to be invested by the university, the income there from to be given as an annual prize "for the best essay in the science of government." It was hoped that the prize would "stimulate the students to more earnest and diligent study of the principles which underlie free Institutions."

William Johnson, Virginia Delegate, Letter regarding Secession Convention

Scope and Contents Letter from William Johnson, who at the time represented Barbour County in the Virginia House of Delegates. The letter may be addressed to Colonel Jesse Teter, Esq.; it was sent from Richmond, VA, and dated 1861 March 25. It includes a recounting of recent events in the House, and mentions "the Hamilton Draft", a bill transferring the James River and Kanawha Canal to "the French Company", the activities of the Virginia Secession Convention and the author's concerns about its effectiveness....

Photocopy of the marriage certificate of William Joseph and Sarah Stafford dated 1766. At the time of their marriage, the couple lived in Sussex County, Delaware. The couple moved to Monongalia County about 1770 and lived the rest of their lives in Morgantown.

William K. Smith Family Papers

Overview

The collection is highlighted by the Civil War papers of William K. Smith of Tyler Co. Militia rosters, wartime letters, a military pass, commendation, and pension claim are among the papers. Smith, of the West Virginia 14th. Infantry, Company F, died in a Confederate prison hospital in 1865, and other papers in the collection belonged to his widow, Christena. Family letters, financial papers, and home remedies are included.
