Overview
Correspondence of a member and president, 1921-1929, of the West Virginia State Board of Control, which directed the financial operations of all state institutions from 1909 to 1933. Most of the letters are between Lakin and Dr. Henry D. Hatfield; subjects include medical and hospital affairs, the Greater Huntington Hospital Association, the Kessler-Hatfield Hospital in Huntington, and applications for political office. Operator in the Logan coalfield for many years, collector of Internal Revenue for West Virginia, and president of the state Board of Control, 1937-1941. Thurmond returned to the coal industry in 1941 and helped organize the Southern Coal Producers' Association, serving as its secretary until his retirement in 1958.
