Overview The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was a fraternal organization composed of veterans of the Union armies of the American Civil War. The GAR flag was given to Corporal Thomas Noah Tipton in celebration of his pension. It was presented to him at Berlin, Pennsylvania, on June 15, 1867.
