Alice E. “Betty” Boyd was born 1922 April 10, in Brooklyn, New York. She received a bachelor’s degree from WVU in speech and pre-medicine in 1942. Betty Boyd served West Virginia University for almost four decades. She was Director of the YWCA and YMCA from 1948–1952; Assistant Dean of Women, 1952–1955; Dean of Women, 1955–1968; Associate Dean of Student Educational Services, 1968–1980; and Dean of Student Life, 1980–1987.

She received numerous awards during her lifetime, including the Mary Catherine Buswell Award for outstanding contributions to West Virginia University women; Most Loyal Mountaineer; the Order of Vandalia for unselfish dedication to WVU; and the West Virginia Association of Student Personnel Administrators Distinguished Service Award. She was also inducted into Mountain, a student honorary, and Mortar Board’s honorary alumni chapter.
