Dr. Perley Isaac Reed (1887-1973) was an English and journalism professor and the founder of the School of Journalism at West Virginia University in 1939. Collection consists of a typescript copy of "The Modern Newspaper as a Social Instrument," which was written by Reed in 1948 with the goal of defining a good modern newspaper in the middle of the 20th century.
