Biographical / Historical

William Farley Bowman, Jr. was drafted for active duty by the U.S. Armed Forces (Army) on 12 August 1952. At that time he was 21 years of age and had completed two years of college. Upon completion of basic training at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, he was sent to Korea. On the train trip to the front lines his name was called out, and he was asked to report to the commander in charge. Bowman was offered an office assignment behind the lines, and he felt the offer was due to his two years of college education. Although he wasn't on the front lines, he told of hearing the bombing, witnessing fires, and seeing casualties. He even lost part of his hearing in one ear during this time. He attained the rank of Sergeant on 19 March 1954. He returned to the United States and was given an honorable discharge from the Army at Fort Knox, Kentucky on 21 May 1954.
