"Dear Mother" "…New Orleans is certainly one of the greatest places in the world there is now 1200 ships lying at the wharf besides other craft, to tedious to mention. I came to Mobile on the Steam Ship Creole and came very near being blown up. The air pump got something in it about two at night; and grounded on a sand reef about 12 in the fog. She struck very hard it jolted me nearly out of my birth [sic] but after working we got off about day and arrived safe.", 28 December [no year]
