This series contains material collected and created by Thomas W. Gavett while chairman of the West Virginia Human Rights Commission between 1961 and 1966. It includes general information related to the WV HRC and activities he undertook on the commissions behalf. It includes meeting minutes and agendas, correspondence, reports, newspaper clippings, and brochures. Topics of interest include Gavett's work with the Charleston Youth Community, Inc., Governor's Conference on Human Rights, and Mayor's Commission on Human Relations; a special hearing at Lakin State Hospital; the hiring of Howard W. McKinney as the WV HRC's first executive director; and research on the West Virginia Interracial Commission.
