Scope and Contents
This series documents the activities of Shelley Moore, First Lady of West Virginia from 1969 to 1977. She served as Honorary Chair of the West Virginia Library Commission, member of the West Virginia Commission on Mental Retardation, and member of the West Virginia Developmental Disabilities Planning and Advisory Council. The series contains Library Commission reports, library accession lists, publication lists, information on public library construction; and reports, meeting minutes, ephemera from the West Virginia Commission on Mental Retardation and the West Virginia Developmental Disabilities Planning and Advisory Council. As First Lady of West Virginia, Moore was responsible for hosting and coordinating social functions at the Governor’s Mansion such as legislative receptions, luncheons, and coffee receptions for various organizations. Moore also participated in social functions at national and regional Governors’ Conferences. Included are invitations, documents, and photos relating to many of these social events. Also included are personal and general correspondence related to Mrs. Moore’s duties managing incoming and outgoing invitations and requests for entertainment, speaking engagements, recipe requests, needlepoint and other organizations, as well as tour guides for the Governor’s Mansion. One of the most significant social events was her husband’s inauguration as Governor in 1969. There are many photos and correspondence related to this event.
