Scope and Contents

Kemp’s consulting business, Past and Present, was contracted by the NRCS (formerly the SCS) to prepare HABS/HAER-like records of historic structures that would potentially be impacted by the construction of a multipurpose dam on the North Fork Hughes River in Ritchie County, West Virginia. This box includes research materials he used in preparing the records, including photographic prints, handwritten notes, correspondence, and reports. The box also includes facsimiles of the following: book excerpts, articles, reports, clippings, maps, and bibliographies. Subjects include natural gas; carbon black; oil; mineral resources; the Hughes River; Pleasants County, West Virginia; Wood County, West Virginia; Ritchie County, West Virginia; the railroad in Ritchie County and general West Virginia geography and soil composition. The following oversize items were moved to Box 344: five maps (1918 and 1994).
