Scope and Contents

Kemp researched Charles Ellet Jr. as part of his restoration of the Wheeling Suspension Bridge, and he eventually published several articles on the nineteenth century engineer. This box contains facsimiles of Ellet’s correspondence and facsimile clippings. The folders are primarily arranged by year. Subjects include the collapse of the Wheeling Suspension Bridge and repairs to the bridge, ordering metal for the bridge, happenings in the Ellet family, Ellet’s views on the Civil War, his invention of the steam ram, the Battle of Memphis, and Ellet’s fatal wounding at the battle.
