Overview

Genealogies of the William Piper (de Piper) family from 1767 to 1996, and of the Jacob Smith family from 1758 to 1979. Genealogies include brief histories and indexes of family descendants. There are also photocopies and transcriptions of William Piper's legal records: his marriage certificate, a deed, and an appraisal of his estate with a list of items sold after his death. William Piper was born in Scotland in 1767, eventually immigrating to America, where he died in Virginia in 1836.

Biographical / Historical

William Piper (de Piper) was born on July 18, 1767 in Scotland where he first served as an apprentice to a cabinet maker. He then took a position on an English ship and sailed between Liverpool, Baltimore, and New York. William eventually settled with his wife, Ann Steele, in eastern Virginia where he practiced farming, distilling, and cabinet making until his death in 1836.

Jacob Smith, born in 1758, fathered John Smith, the son-in-law of William Piper (de Piper). Jacob served in the Maryland militia during the Revolutionary War. He died July 26, 1834 in Morgan County, West Virginia.
