 Collection
Collection Number: A&M 3526

Scope and Contents

Four scrapbooks (containing letters, photographs, clippings, greeting cards, ephemera, etc.) and two yearbooks created and collected by Anna Santore DeLancy (1911-2001). Anna DeLancy was a Sunday School teacher at The Shack, a Presbyterian neighborhood house operating in Pursglove, West Virginia. She spent most of her life as a librarian in New York City.

One scrapbook documents the missionary work of her friends Gerald and Sylvia Zimmer in Tungjen in Kweichow, China during the period 1936-1941. They were missionaries from the Spruce Street Methodist Church in Morgantown, West Virginia. It includes over 35 lengthy and detailed letters authored by Sylvia Zimmer regarding her experiences as a missionary, describing interactions with the local population (including children, officials, etc.), local customs and religious practices (including Taoism and Buddhism), the natural landscape, problems with bandits, and the effects of the Japanese invasion of China, among other topics. One letter describes taking cover to escape the gunfire of bandits, and the letter of November 1, 1939 recounts a story by someone who had escaped strafing by Japanese aircraft in Nanchang (among other topics). There are also a few photographs of the Zimmers and other subjects in China, clippings from the Morgantown Post regarding the Zimmers, a copy of a message from Madame Chiang Kai-Shek to missionaries in China (April 6, 1938), and a guest list and menu from ocean liners.

The remaining three scrapbooks document the life of Anna DeLancy and her husband Charles DeLancy (an engineering student at West Virginia University) in the area of Jefferson, Greene County, Pennsylvania, and Morgantown, West Virginia, during the period of ca. 1921-1938. Scrapbook one contains: photographs of Charles DeLancy; calling cards; school souvenir booklet of Jefferson Borough School, Greene County, Pennsylvania (PA), including portrait of teacher Helen M. Gregg (1921); group portrait of Jefferson Borough School class; photograph of Cheat Lake bridge (ca. 1930s); cyanotype photographs of the DeLancy family of Jefferson, PA; Jefferson High School Alumni Day memorabilia (1927, 1931, 1933); greeting cards; valentines cards; West Virginia University ephemera (fee cards, dance cards, etc., ca. 1930-1933); letters by Anna Santore to Charles DeLancy (1930s); clippings of poetry; six accordion postcard booklets (1930s), documenting Fairmont, West Virginia, Chicago, Illinois, University of Notre Dame, and Detroit, Michigan.

Scrapbook two contains: photograph of Anna and Charles DeLancy; Shack memorabilia (including program and menu); clipping regarding reception for Mary Behner (1938); Metropolitan Theatre program for Pirates of Penzance (1938); West Virginia University ephemera (fee card, library card, student activity book, sports schedule, 1937-1938); cards and letters of condolence to Anna DeLancy regarding death of Charles DeLancy (1938); illustrated stationary of Hotel Prichard in Huntington, West Virginia; two exterior photographs of Clover Farm Stores outlet in Jefferson, PA, one with owner Joseph DeLancy standing in front, the other including Rogers Restaurant next door.

Scrapbook three contains: Scott's Run photographs, broadside for Jefferson High School production of musical comedy "Coast to Coast" (ca. 1938); ephemera from Solomons Island Regatta, Solomons Island, Maryland; program for Clover Farm Stores Ninth Annual Picnic at Idlewild Park (August 3, 1938); "Racing Program" for 27th Annual Waynesburg (PA) Fair, including extensive advertising for businesses in Jefferson and Waynesburg (September 7-9, 1938); greeting cards.
