Four Goff Brothers of Western Virginia, Genealogy Research Papers

 Collection
Collection Number: A&M 3655

Scope and Contents

The index on the DVD is intended as a finding aid for the research material in the collection, and though it's not an exact instrument, it's generally reliable. A paper copy of the index is also available. The index provides chronological access to the collection by date, reflecting when research material was mailed from Roy Lockhart to Phillip Goff. The collection is also arranged by date: box 1, 1999/12/8 - 2000/8/16; box 2, 2000/8/16 - 2001/1/3; box 3, 2001/5/9 - 2001/7/9; and box 4, 2001/7/17 - 2003/6/30. The DVD is filed in box 1.

The contents of each index entry consists of a combination of correspondence between the authors, and a list of copies of original documents and secondary sources according to their respective source repositories. Most original documents are identified by type (letters, deeds, wills, etc.) and date of creation, and include personal and geographic names. This indexing system was created by the authors for purposes of preparing their book, "The Four Goff Brothers of Western Virginia". Some materials appear to be missing: records indexed to 8 January 1999 and 12 July 1999 and part of 18 December 1999 were not found. In addition, the last group of copied documents, 16 December 2003, are not included in the finding aid.

Oversized documents have been removed from their original context in the collection and have been stored in an oversize box, including:
