 Collection
Collection Number: A&M 3761

Scope and Contents

Incoming postcards to Ethel Flesher Stewart (1890-1988) of St. Marys, West Virginia.

The 20 postcards featuring images of West Virginia University (9 items) and Morgantown (11 items) are mostly from a correspondent named "James", a WVU student whose messages provide a snapshot of student life in the academic year 1908-1909. They include references to studying, class assignments, and use of free time, among other topics.

Of special interest is a card from 16 November 1908 referencing a hockey game between "W.V.U. Varsity" and the "Pittsburg Lyceum". He mentions how he "...stood around in the snow for two hours and nearly froze to death," but "...couldn't miss seeing the game." A card from 25 October 1908 mentions an early automobile accident, where someone named Dr. Sellars died from the injuries he received in the mishap.

Postcards include photographs of subjects and locations in West Virginia, including West Virginia University (9 items), Morgantown (11 items), St. Marys (8), Parkersburg (5), Sistersville (3), Mannington (3), and Marshall College (2). There are also single postcards for: Berwind (tipple), New Martinsville, Spencer, Thomas (sawmill), West Virginia Wesleyan College, Willow Grove (steamship "Virginia" stranded in corn field), and Woodland (train wreck).
