Newspaper clippings, photographs, sheet music, and other material regarding Isaac B. Smith, a farmer and music teacher from Gilmer County. Smith (1876-1984) lived to be 107 years old.
This collection is organized into seven series:
Series 1. Newspaper clippings; 1974-1984; box 1, folders 1-4. Contains originals and photocopies of newspaper clippings regarding Smith's 100th birthday, his career as a music teacher, and his death, among other subjects.
Series 2. Photographs; 1885, 1900, ca. 1970-1980; box 1, folder 5. Contains a black and white postcard of Smith with students (ca. 1900) and a matted portrait photograph of Smith (ca. 1970-1980). There is also a print of a photograph of a brass band (1885) that was copied from a newspaper clipping in this collection.
Series 3. Certificate; 1976; box 1, folder 6. Contains a color reproduction of certificate from the State of West Virginia honoring Smith for reaching the age of 100 and his contributions to the state.
Series 4. Sheet Music; 1972; box 1, folder 7. Contains a piece of sheet music composed by Smith titled "The Wanderer".
Series 5. Booklets; 1909-1934; box, folders 8-9. Contains booklets of commercially published sheet music (mainly produced by the Willis Music Company), a booklet regarding playing the mandolin, and other material.
Series 6. Oversize; ca. 1900; unboxed. Contains a large chart used for teaching the shape note system of music notation.
