Perry D. Strausbaugh (1886-1965) was the head of West Virginia University's Department of Botany from 1923-1948. He also reestablished the university's herbarium and led a number of botanical and biological expeditions throughout the state to collect specimens for study.
Earl L. Core (1902-1984) studied and later taught biology at West Virginia University. He was head of the Biology Department from 1948 to 1967. He also served as the curator of the herbarium starting in 1934. Core had been a student of Strausbaugh's and the two collaborated frequently in their research, including writing "Flora of West Virginia" together.
