Overview

Benjamin F. Hughes served in the 3rd West Virginia Mounted Infantry and the 6th West Virginia Cavalry during the Civil War. Collection contains four letters from Hughes and other materials from the 1860s. Four letters from Hughes from December 1863 to April 1864 describe the weather; Hughes's health and loss of hearing; a possible visit home; Rosser's Raid on Moorefield, West Virginia; and Confederates at Harper's Ferry. Also includes a December 1861 petition asking the resignation of Capt. Cyrus Webb of Co. F, 3rd regiment, Virginia Volunteers, bearing forty -six signatures, including that of Benjamin F. Hughes. Other Civil War related documents include an 1862 letter from William [Dearing] from Camp Elkwater, West Virginia, about trying to be content under circumstances and conditions of war, not being able to walk home to visit, the weather, and fighting for the preservation of the Union, and a December 1864 letter from A.J. Squires of Preston County, W. Va. about land in Michigan, weather and snow, and family news. Collection also includes an unsigned letter from Fort Kasper, Dakota Territory, giving a description and drawing of Laramie Peak in the vicinity of Platte River dated October 1865.
