Papers of Judge Gideon D. Camden (1805-1891) of Clarksburg, Harrison County, West Virginia. Camden was a lawyer, Democratic politician, member of the Virginia Convention of 1850-1851, circuit judge, and state senator (1872-1876). All four items relate to Camden's legal work. Contains his Oath of Attorney At Law (1831); appointment to prosecute on behalf of the Commonwealth (1834); record of judgeship of the 21st judicial circuit and the circuit court of Randolph County, noting that Camden presided as judge of the 21st circuit until May 30, 1861 (1855); and an official document granting leave to practice law and took oath as an Attorney At Law (1871). All four items are typescript copies from Virginia Law Order Book, Nos. 4 and 9 of the records of Randolph County, West Virginia.
