Biographical / Historical

The volume was compiled by William Henry Foote (1794-1869), a prominent Presbyterian minister and historian (Yale 1916, Princeton 1819) who lived for many years in Romney and is buried in its Indian Mound Cemetery. It was subsequently owned by Champe Warren Pattie (1838-1911), who in 1869 married Nancy Harper, daughter of William Harper (publisher). How the volume passed from Foote to Pattie is unknown, although Foote officiated Pattie’s marriage to Nancy Harper on October 20, 1869 (only 33 days before Foote’s death) and perhaps the bound volume was a wedding gift. Champe Warren Pattie served in Virginia's 25th Infantry Regiment, C.S.A., during the Civil War. He continued to reside in West Virginia after the war until moving to Dyersville, Iowa in 1875.

The volume descended in the Pattie family to Champe’s grandson, James Warren Pattie, who graduated from University of Iowa, and after serving in the Navy during WWII, had a long and distinguished career as an attorney in Marshalltown, Iowa. James Warren Pattie’s descendants donated the volume to the West Virginia and Regional History Center in 2018 so that it can be shared with those studying the early and mid-19th century history of (West) Virginia.
