One letter, written 14 November 1883, discusses the discovery of coal near Newburg, West Virginia . Lucy received frequent correspondence from her friend Anna Miller, a school teacher in Fairmont, and from her cousin Tona Minnear, a store clerk in Newburg and correspondent for the Preston County Journal.
