3 booklets and a freshman beanie regarding West Virginia University belonging to Eugene Maddex and assorted West Virginia University-related ephemera regarding environmental activism, student life, and more belonging to Lee Maddex (Eugene's son). Also included are several flyers, posters, and other ephemera promoting performances of local Morgantown bands (specifically Nexus and Granny's 12 Gauge).
The addendum of 2025 May 20 includes materials documenting Eugene Byington Maddex's career as an engineer in the United States Navy during World War II, including photographs, Japanese propaganda, medals and other insignia, a wooden block with a character meaning "boss" in one of the languages of Papua New Guinea, and more.
The addendum of 2026 June 30 includes photographs, slides, and ephemera documenting Lee Maddex's time as a student at West Virginia University, including photographs and slides taken as part of public history coursework and projects, ephemera from Maddex's freshman year at WVU (1975-1976), and other material. Also includes a printed history of the National Conservation Training Center property in Shepherdstown, WV; some of the original property for the NCTC was owned by Lee Maddex's great-grandfather before its acquisition by the United States government.
This collection is unprocessed but is open for research (except for the beanie [Box 2], which is restricted until it can be cleaned). Please contact the West Virginia & Regional History Center in advance to request access.
