The papers of Dana Brooks include materials related to his faculty research about Black athletes and school athletics programs in pre- and post-segregation West Virginia and other materials related to his work leading the College of Physical Activity and Sports Sciences (CPASS, known as the School of Sport Science since 2022).
Series 1 (boxes 1 and 2) includes research materials compiled by Dean Brooks regarding athletics at West Virginia’s Black high schools and colleges and West Virginia’s Black cultural history broadly. Some of these research materials relate to CPASS programs, like the 2004 Brown v. Board commemorative “Family Reunion” event, where research was conducted by Brooks. Also included are materials relating to Brooks’s work as a board member of the West Virginia All Black Schools Sports and Academic (ABSSA) Hall of Fame. The kinds of materials most common in this series are handwritten research notes, photocopies of relevant history or sociology articles, photographs, newspaper clippings, printouts of demographic statistics, and commemorative event programs or other publications from relevant WV schools.
Series 2 (boxes 3-5) includes materials created or compiled by Brooks in his capacity as Dean of CPASS from 1992-2019. There are programs from CPASS events; CPASS promotional pins; materials collected by Brooks at WVU and non-university events he attended; posters from CPASS events, including signed posters from the college’s 50th anniversary celebration of the Brown v. Board of Education decision; newspaper clippings and magazine articles featuring CPASS events and faculty; and other books and publications that related to Brooks's interests and work as Dean.

Dr. Dana Brooks served as the Dean of the West Virginia University College of Physical Education and Sport Sciences from 1992 to 2019. Brooks earned his Associate of Arts degree at Hagerstown Community College, his Bachelor of Science degree at Towson University, and both his Master of Science and Doctor of Education degrees at West Virginia University. His research focuses on sports integration, experiences of Black athletes in high school and college sports, and sports sociology broadly. He has authored or edited numerous books and articles, including The Black Athlete in West Virginia (2020), Diversity and Social Justice in College Sports (2007), and Racism in College Athletics (2020).
