This collection was created through the composition of materials removed from other A&M collections, staff collected materials, and the merging of smaller collections. As a result, this collection covers a wide range of activities and movements from West Virginia and the larger Appalachian region. The subject areas of the collection include: 1) state petitions, and government announcements, 1777-1979; 2) public announcements, public sales, and advertisements, 1853-1899; 3) elections, political ephemera, 1777-1999; 4) West Virginia University, Storer College, education, lectures, educational programs, student activism, Greek life, 1865-2012; 5) Civil War, slavery, reconstruction, 1861-1877; 6) WWI, WWII, 1913-1946; 7) events, concerts, entertainment, 1853-2012; 8) unions, mining, coal mining, labor movements, socialism, strikes, rallies, protests, feminism, environment, 1890-1999.

During 19th and 20th century broadsides were one of the most popular ways to disseminate information to the public. While ephemeral in nature, broadsides contain significant information on events, current news, government decisions, advertisements for products and services, social causes, and much more. In West Virginia broadsides have popularly been used to disseminate information on state petitions, labor organizing, sale of estates, political organizing, protest, transportation, and education.
