The Monongahela Power Company was started in 1890 as "Fairmont Electric Light and Power," and operated a plant on the Monongahela River. The company opened Fairmont's first electric streetcar line, and in 1921 the company was renamed "Monongahela Power and Railway Company." Two years later, the company's name was again changed to the "Monongahela West Penn Public Service Company." The company continued to grow, and by the 1940s had left the streetcar business, becoming "Monongahela Power Company" in 1945. The company is a subsidiary of Allegheny Energy.
Ice worked for the Monongahela Power Company as a geologist since around 1930. He graduated from West Virginia University in 1923, where he had been a member of the Geological Society.
