The court appropriates and arranges to borrow $5,000 for defense of the county in accordance with an act of the Virginia legislature, inasmuch as the ". . . State has been invaded by a hostile army of Northern Fanatics, and we feel bound to resist said invasion to the last extremity. . . . ".
This book contains articles primarily of a historical nature; much of it dealing with the history of Virginia, West Virginia, and the Southern Seaboard. There are a few contemporary articles and obituary notices of several West Virginians.
These items include an autograph letter of Governor J.B. Jackson, 1884; and embossed state seal with the autograph signature of Governor Henry M. Mathews, ca. 1877-1861; and a picture of Joseph H. Diss Debar, designer of the W. Va. State seal.
