Autograph letter signed, Canton 8 August 1864. 3pp. "Albert is staying in Stepps yet & I in the Jew Store though my time will be out in about 3 weeks…We had news to day that Mobile was in a fair way of having taken hope it may be true. I think the Union cause looks as dark as it ever has looked though I have no doubt as to the final result. The government has the power if it only uses it I don't care if there is a good many copperheads & Traitors in the country. I wish it would call out every man in the country that is able to bear arms and if they cant be used now let them be ready for service when they are needed. I for one will never grumble but the consequence be what it may. For the way they treated our prisoners I think it would be a good plan for the government to retaliate by putting the prisoners we hold at hard labor on public works if they retaliate for this they will have to feed our men or they can't work them for every Negro soldier they murder we ought to hang 3 Rebels. There is no use fooling about it if the government employs them it must give what protection it can it surely ought to use them for if we don't they will …", 8 August 1864
