Kemp was appointed by the United States Senate to investigate and evaluate the possibility of creating a national historic landmark that incorporated the story of Calumet Township, Michigan and the Quincy Mine, two areas on the Keweenaw Peninsula of Michigan known for their relation to the copper mining industry.
