Correspondence, sermons, religious writings, and accounts of a graduate of Wesleyan University and Harvard Law School, Methodist missionary to India (ca.1876-1885), and son of Representative James Clark McGrew of Kingwood. Subjects include West Virginia politics; social activities in Kingwood; conditions in the Indian mission field; nautical improvements tested at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, 1879; Northwestern University; and the Republican National Convention of 1880.

Included is a letter from M.O. Dawson who is running for governor soliciting names of Republican voters. Subjects covered include death, illness, and news in the family, and West Virginia state politics.

Correspondence, newspaper clippings, and financial papers of a lawyer and state senator from Kingwood, who was instrumental in the organization of the West Virginia Northern Railroad, and the Kingwood Coal and Coke Company. Subjects include state politics, 1888-1895, Virginia Debt Question, the tariff debate, land development, coal mining and railroads. Correspondents include J.M. Mason, W.E. Chilton, S.B. Elkins, and George C. Sturgiss.
