Souvenir newspaper announcing the end of World War II in the Pacific published for the crew of the USS Maui. The newspaper was owned by James Albert Parker, a member of the ship's crew and a native of West Virginia. In addition to a number of articles regarding the surrender of Japan, the newspaper also includes an article about West Virginia Senator Harley M. Kilgore and the post-war need for coal.
James E. Mann, Jr., Appointment, Diploma, and Clippings
Contains the appointment of James E. Mann to West Virginia's Mercer County Local Board No. 1 (draft board) during World War II (1940); diploma awarded to Lucy Austin Higginbotham (later Mrs. James E. Mann) for graduation from West Virginia University (1929); and a scrapbook of newspaper clippings, most regarding Sergeant Junior J. Spurrier (ca. 1945). Spurrier was a WWII hero from Bluefield, and a recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor.
