Atkeson also played a leading role in the development of the West Virginia University Agricultural College at Morgantown where he was a professor for many years.

Born 1766 in Ireland, he emigrated to Greenbrier Co. in the 1790s and became a relative through marriage of Col. John Stuart, a local prominent citizen.
