Overview

History of the Haymond family, pioneer residents of the Palatine tract in Marion County, West Virginia. Eight letters written by William Haymond to his nephew Luther Haymond recall frontier life in the Monongahela, Tygart, Ohio, and Kanawha valleys, 1780-1793. Subjects include the settlement of Morgantown, Clarksburg, Williamstown, the Palatine tract, and Coburn's Fort; land surveys in Harrison County; trapping and hunting; road surveying; and Indian warfare.

Typescript copy of William Henry Edwards' Autobiographical Notes. Edwards was a naturalist from Coalburgh, W. Va. And is best known for his three volume "The Butterflies of North America" (1879-1897). Earlier he had published "Voyage up the Amazon" (1847).

The manuscript contains typed copies of letters from Alfred R. Wallace, H. W. Bates, Theodore L. Mead, Prof. D. J. Ansted, Richard V. Murray, Louis Agassis, Samuel W. Scudder, Addison Ballard, and Dwight W. Marsh.

Overview

Two copies of notes about and transcriptions of a Civil War diary of William Henry Hall. Hall was a captain of the WV 6th. Inf., Co. F which was recruited in Preston Co. and which served in north central WV guarding the B&O rail line and engaging in operations against Confederate raiders, most notably defending Rowlesburg from an attack by the Jones-Imboden raid. Also includes facsimile of diary.

Overview Telegram by Colonel William Henry Powell, 2nd West Virginia Cavalry, from Camp Piatt, to Captain Eli W. Botsford, 16th Ohio Infantry, dated 6 July 1863. The telegram regards the report of a scouting party concerning Confederate troop positions and recent engagements.
