Scope and Contents Scrapbooks, correspondence, business papers, and memorabilia of a prominent Charleston family that were long time owners of the Charleston Gazette. There are papers of W. E. Chilton, Sr., and for his son and grandson, W. E. Chilton, Jr. and W. E. Chilton, III. The papers of Chilton senior include some correspondence, but mostly land papers documenting the coal mining district in Webster and Braxton Counties. Charleston Newspapers Final Issue Printing Plates

Content Description

Two printing plates for the front pages of the Charleston Gazette and Charleston Daily Mail on the date of the final editions of those newspapers. The final issues of each newspaper were published 15 July 2015. Starting 20 July 2015, the two newspapers were merged into a single publication, the Charleston Gazette-Mail. The printing plates are thin sheets of metal measuring 12 1/2 in. x 23 1/2 in.
