Postcard distributed by the Queen City Coal Company advertising Island Creek Coal, which was produced by the coal mining town of Holden in Logan County, West Virginia. The Queen City Coal Company was located in Cincinnati, Ohio and operated from 1905 until 1921. The postcard also contains two packs of sewing needles of varying sizes.

Operator in the Logan coalfield for many years, collector of Internal Revenue for West Virginia, and president of the state Board of Control, 1937-1941. Thurmond returned to the coal industry in 1941 and helped organize the Southern Coal Producers' Association, serving as its secretary until his retirement in 1958.
