Stealey Family Papers

Account books and ledger journals of a farm, coal mine, and grist mill owned by James Irvin Samson Stealey in Clarksburg, West Virginia, 1865-1907. The mill, known as the Point Mill, was located at Point Comfort, where the Elk Creek and West Fork River join.

This collection includes two series:

Stevens Coal Company Records

Overview

Acme, West Virginia, company which consisted of the Empire, Acme, and Keystone mines, and also had an interest in railroads. The collection contains a letter-book, payrolls, time-books, and coal shipment records. The letter-book has correspondence between T.F. Garrison and John J. Shouk of the Shouk-Garrison Coal Co. Payroll records include deductions from wages for rent, smithing, doctor, and company store accounts.

None of Cornell's holdings pertain directly to West Virginia.

Overview Operator in the Logan coalfield for many years, collector of Internal Revenue for West Virginia, and president of the state Board of Control, 1937-1941. Thurmond returned to the coal industry in 1941 and helped organize the Southern Coal Producers' Association, serving as its secretary until his retirement in 1958.
