Index Card Notes: To the General Assembly of Virginia: The undersigned, citizens of Monongalia, Harrison and Lewis Counties respectfully represent that the trade in lumber and products on the Monongahela & West Fork, have increased on the past few years... the obstruction caused by erecting dams across the river is a great evil and damage is often sustained to rafts and boats descending; if the dams were removed and winged dams made in the ripples there would be no risk... boats carrying from 20-30 tons would ascend from March 1st to June 1st in any season, if a good one--until Sept. 1st... by this citizens could abstain salt, iron... from Pittsburg... they pray some mode of pay be made to the owners where their dams have been sanctioned by law, and winged dams installed in the ripples... etc.
