Monongalia County Petition, 1839 December 16

Index Card Notes: To the honorable speaker of the house of delegates of VA. The undersigned, inhabitants of the county of Monongalia, beg leave to represent, that at the last election your petitioners were informed that John Clayton and Caleb Tanxey were elected as delegates from this county and the public mind seemed to be reconciled. But the sheriffs, on the grounds of some supposed mistake, reversed their first proclamation, and declared one James Evans elected in place of said Tanxey. The proceedings have thrown such a doubt and uncertainty over the final result, as to believing the election should be set aside and a new election awarded so the people be heard fairly and unequivocally speak their will on this subject.-- May it please the body over which you preside to do so.
