Index Card Notes: To the honorable, the general assembly of Virginia: The Memorial of the Wheeling and Belmont Bridge Co., by the president and board of managers thereof, respectfully represents, your memorialist is a corporation...That erected a wire suspension bridge over the main channel of the Ohio River, at Wheeling, and that important work has recently been completed...A few steamboats, which have been built since the bridge was undertaken, have been furnished with chimneys of extravagant height, 80 FT. Without rigging to depress them...an action has been commenced at Pittsburg against some of the wheeling stockholders to make them liable for damages done to the smokestacks....your memorialists pray that a law may be passed to permit the bridge to stand at its present height according to the measurements above given after deducting from them about two feet for the thickness of the flooring.
