Scope and Contents

Contains a bibliography of works by Richard Marks, correspondence, articles and a paper by Marks, philatelic items, and other material. Most material regards the genealogy and history of the Marks family in West Virginia, as well as West Virginia history in general.

Original acquisition includes bibliography of 129 works authored by Richard Marks between 1977 and 1996, mostly regarding the genealogy and history of the Marks family in West Virginia, as well as West Virginia history in general. Many of these pieces were published in the "West Virginia Hillbilly". There is correspondence between Marks and the Cultural Center in Charleston, among others, regarding the progress of the production of two highway markers, which were purchased and designed by Marks, to provide a brief history of the Great Walton Fair and Dr. Perry French Marks. With the letters are copies of his articles titled "The Walton Fair", "Perry French Marks, M.D. Left His Mark on Walton", and "West Virginia Stamps". There is also a seven page paper written by Marks titled "Creating a University: The University of Charleston", a list of books used by Marks in the Kanawha County School system, and a compilation of newspaper clippings, photographs, stamps, brochures and other items related to the 1961-1965 Turkish-American Philatelic Exhibitions held in Ankara, Turkey.

Addendum of 2000/09/21 includes philatelic items, material regarding the University of Charleston, and other material. (1929-1994; 1 in.)

Addendum of 2002/07/11 includes publications and news clippings regarding West Virginia history and tourism, stamps, and ephemera. Also contains various artifacts, including a pair of safety glasses, commemorative souvenir plates and cups, and a West Virginia-shaped puzzle. (1930-1989; 7 1/2 in.)

Addendum of 2006/09/16 includes philatelic items; news clippings, maps, postcards and other material regarding West Virginia; and stone artifacts identified as Indian Mound arrowheads. (1929-2001; 5 in.)

Addendum of 2007/07/26 includes Marks family genealogy; photographs of the Marks family and historical subjects; material regarding Dunbar High School and Morris Harvey College; news clippings regarding Bicentennial celebrations in Charleston, West Virginia; an American flag; philatelic items; and a framed portrait photograph. (1789-1981; 6 in.)
