Biographical / Historical

Robert Knox Sneden (1832, Nova Scotia - 1918) was a map-maker for the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was also a landscape painter, prolific illustrator, and memoirist.

Robert Sneden left Brooklyn in 1861 to enlist in the 40th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment of the Army of the Potomac, serving as a quartermaster. From 12 January 1862 he served on Samuel P. Heintzelman's III Corps staff as a draughtsman making maps.He was later assigned to David B. Birney's Division, and then to the staff of general William H. French. On 27 November 1863 Sneden was captured by Confederate troops under Mosby. After incarceration in Libby Prison (where he caught typhoid fever) and Andersonville, he was exchanged on 11 December 1864.

After the war he transformed a number of his war time drawings into watercolors.
