This collection contains the administrative records of West Virginia University's Office of Student Affairs from 1957 to 2002. Subjects include student organizations, committees and task forces related to campus life, school sponsored conferences and special events, and university policies. Formats include correspondence, reports, project files, slides and meeting minutes.
The material is organized into eight series:
Series 1. Correspondence, 1968-1978 (box 1): Correspondence between the Dean of Student Affairs and prospective, present, and former students and parents, university faculty and staff, and student organizations. Topics covered include housing, budgets, student leadership and issues such as low class attendance and traffic congestion. Highlights include correspondence with the university president regarding student organized anti-war protests, as well as responses from students, parents and the greater community to "controversial" invited speakers, such as Cassius Clay (later known as Muhammad Ali).
Series 2. University Policies, Procedures and Memoranda, 1965-1997 (boxes 2 and 3): Official memoranda including Board of Regents (now Board of Governors) policy bulletins and various policies regarding residence halls, the GED testing program, housing problems, parking spaces for disabled students and tuition waivers.
Series 3. Student Clubs and Organizations, 1971-1980 (box 3): Records of student organizations such as campus political parties, student administration, volunteer projects and student legislature. Also includes several folders of concession permit applications submitted on behalf of various student-founded clubs. Record types include budgets, financial policies, correspondence, reports, meeting minutes and notes.
Series 4. Committees, Task Forces and Student Services, 1955-1999 (boxes 4-7): Includes records of various Student Affairs affiliates including the Student Safety Task Force, Task Force on Resident Life, Student Affairs Advisory Committee, Student Educational Services (SES) and the Committee on Fraternity/Sorority Policies and Procedures. Also includes select Board of Regents and University Senate meeting minutes and Health Service Committee records.
Series 5. Annual Reports, 1957-2000 (boxes 7 and 8): Departments include Admissions, Career Services, the Center for Black Culture, Counseling, Financial Aid, Health Services, Housing and Residence Life, the Mountainlair, Student Activities and Student Life.
Series 6. Conferences and Events, 1962-2000 (box 9): Records of university-hosted concerts, conferences and other special events, such as the Jump-Start Program, Student Leadership Conference, University Arts Series, Mid-Atlantic College Health Association (MACHA) conference, National Association of College and University Food Services (NACUFS) conference and the West Virginia Association of Student Personnel (WVASPA) conference. There are also records of entertainers who were hired to perform at campus venues. Formats include programs, handbooks, proposals, correspondence and contracts.
Series 7. Miscellaneous Papers, 1962-2002 (boxes 9 and 10): Includes a wide variety of material such as blank employee forms, WVU activities calendars and visiting entertainer contracts.
Series 8. Slides (box 11): Individual photographic slides and two curated slide show presentations for high school outreach efforts. Slide shows include photos of West Virginia University campus life and programs with accompanying scripts for high school guidance counselors.
