 Collection
Collection Number: A&M 5173

Overview

One crayon portrait (17 1/2 in. x 23 1/2 in.) of the first President of West Virginia University, Reverend Alexander Martin. The crayon portrait was popular in the period ca. 1860 to 1900. They were created by enlarging a photograph onto drawing paper with a weak photographic emulsion in order to produce a faint image. An artist then drew over the picture with charcoal or pastels, trying to duplicate the photograph while making it look hand drawn.
