Scope and Contents

Collection includes typescripts, correspondence, and newspaper clippings. Highlights include mimeographed statements relating to the Sigma Nu Foundation of West Virginia, Inc.; the inauguration of Dr. Irvin Stewart as president of West Virginia University; West Virginia authors; and the University budget. Also included are twelve typescripts of letters written from St. Petersburg, Russia, by a representative of the Ross Winans' Locomotive Works, Baltimore, Maryland (1859-1862).

Papers of Dr. Harry Heflin, who served as Interim President (1966, 1973) and President of West Virginia University (1981). The collection includes genealogy records for the Heflin family and other families, photographs, family letters, and other material. Heflin was married to Dora Morgan. Overview

Letter from Dr. Reynolds, prior to when he became acting president of West Virginia University, 1893-1895, to his mother concerning family news and fund-raising efforts for Shelton College in St. Albans, West Virginia. There is also a clipping with a brief biography of Reynolds. Includes facsimiles.

West Virginia University, President Alexander Martin, Crayon Portrait

Overview

One crayon portrait (17 1/2 in. x 23 1/2 in.) of the first President of West Virginia University, Reverend Alexander Martin. The crayon portrait was popular in the period ca. 1860 to 1900. They were created by enlarging a photograph onto drawing paper with a weak photographic emulsion in order to produce a faint image. An artist then drew over the picture with charcoal or pastels, trying to duplicate the photograph while making it look hand drawn.
