Discusses the poverty and problems of Appalachia, explaining that the land is rich with coal, yet its residents are denied adequate food, housing, and medical care. Focuses upon eastern Kentucky where mechanization of the mines is replacing people and jobs. Uses interviews with a local family to show how a lack of education and working skills makes these residents prisoners of the land.
