Assorted legal and historical documents from the Monongalia County, West Virginia, area, including legal documents of the Noah Henderson and Alfred and Flossie Henderson Fordyce families, several Rights of Way and Waivers of Damage for construction on Bula-Fairview Road (most from 1929 September), and assorted other invoices, tax documents, and more. Also includes a land deed for 100 acres in Monongalia County to Jacob Sole, Jr. (1827).

School commissioners' papers, 1821-1846, containing reports to the president and directors of the Literary Fund; treasurer's accounts and reports; reports of tuition paid for poor children; and a report on the formation of school districts. A.T. Caperton, Civil War Letter Regarding Confederate General John Breckinridge

Overview

A two page ALS from A(llen) T. Caperton, a Confederate Senator and resident of Union, Monroe County to Major General John Breckinridge praising the latter's military capabilities. Caperton quotes another officer who remains anonymous that "on every field Gen. Breckinridge was splendid. I have never been associated with a greater man. His removal from us has been a great misfortune to the army. I fear it is not yet at an end . . . If he ranks below any one it is Gen. Lee."

Aten Family Civil War Letters

Overview The Aten Family Civil War letters chronicle the Union Army service of James, John, and Henry Aten. James Aten returned to his native Hancock County from Illinois in February 1861 and enlisted in the First WV Volunteer Infantry for a three-month tour in May 1861. He reenlisted in the Twelfth WV Volunteer Infantry and saw service along the B & O Railroad, the Shenandoah Valley, along the James River and at one point he was a prisoner of war.
