The collection contains record books and papers covering a period from the formation of the county of Monongalia in 1776 to 1933. The collection is broken prior to 1796. There are approximately six hundred thousand pieces including papers on civil and criminal cases, bonds, deeds, wills, licenses, settlements of public offices, school reports, and other papers commonly filled or recorded at county courthouses in the Virginias.
There are two hundred and seventy-five volumes covering a period from 1781 to 1933 and embracing the record books of District Courts, Superior Courts of Law, Circuit 1 Superior Courts of Law and Chancery, Circuit Courts, County Courts, Justices of the Peace, and various books of record of the several county offices.
With this collection have been deposited in the University Library some two hundred volumes of printed matter including Acts of the General Assembly of Virginia (1836-1860, broken), Acts of the Legislature of West Virginia (1863-1932, broken), Journals and Bills of the West Virginia House of Delegates (1866-1897, broken), Journals and Bills of the West Documents of West Virginia Senate (1866-1903, broken), Public Documents (1897-1902), and miscellaneous reports of various state offices and agencies from 1876 to 1932.
