George W. Fairfax Papers

Scope and Contents

Legal papers and business receipts, notes, and accounts of a Preston County sheriff and entrepreneur who operated a tannery and a sawmill. Fairfax was also a Colonel in the Virginia Militia and served as deputy sheriff of Monongalia County about 1854.

German-language documents belonging to the Bischoff family in Preston County (formerly Monongalia) in the early 1800s. Greenville Iron Furnace Ledger

Overview The ledger documents the beginnings of Greenville Iron Furnace in northwestern Preston County. The furnace was erected by Josiah Jackson, heir of the prosperous Cheat Iron Works, and managed by Walter Carlile.
