Patrick McGlynn, Civil War Bounty
Document signed by Patrick McGlynn, who substituted his service in the Union Army for that of Enoch Tinsman for a bounty of four hundred dollars. The document was created in Grafton, West Virginia on 23 February 1865. Collection includes one full color reproduction (two pages) and one photocopy reproduction. See "Historical Note" for further information regarding bounties and commutation of service.
Patrick Plummer Diary
Plummer relates family births, marriages, deaths, farm operations and other business interests. In 1859 he mentions John Brown's raid at Harpers Ferry.

Philip Reesman, Civil War Soldier's Letter.
Letter by Philip Reesman, a Union soldier stationed in West Virginia, to his father John Reesman. He requests that his father take care of recent debts at home, mentions his unit's move out of winter quarters, and his apprehension that they will soon be deployed in a hard battle. The letter is written on stationary with Union Army letterhead with the lyrics of "Answer to Who Will Care for Mother Now?".

Various Pittenger family members wrote these letters, mostly to other family members. The most frequent correspondent is Abraham Pittenger, a farmer, teacher, and local government official in Hancock County. The letters detail farming and marketing of farm goods, educational developments, affairs of the Presbyterian Church, and family events. The collection also provides significant information about the early Republican party, secession crisis, Civil War and Reconstruction.
